Naming, done the traditional way
The right letter first.
The name follows.
In Vedic naming the starting syllable comes from the birth star, not from fashion. Find your baby's nakshatra syllable, then choose a name you actually like from that list.

How Vedic naming works
-
The nakshatra decides
The birth star, one of twenty-seven, maps to a set of starting syllables. Names beginning with those syllables are considered aligned with the child's chart.
-
Rashi is the fallback
If the exact birth time is unknown, the Moon sign can still be calculated in most cases, and each rashi has its own syllable set.
-
The name still has to work
Tradition gives the letter, not the name. Choose something pronounceable in the languages your family actually speaks.
-
Meaning matters
Every name here carries a meaning. A name that sounds right but means something unfortunate is a problem your child inherits.

Choosing the name
-
Get the nakshatra
From birth date, time and place. If you only have the Moon sign, use the rashi list instead.
-
Shortlist by syllable
Use the table above to filter to names that start with the right letters.
-
Check the meaning
Read the meaning, then say the name out loud in the languages your family uses.
-
Check the initials
Make sure the full name does not produce an unfortunate acronym or initials.
Where tradition should stop
The syllable is a naming convention, not a guarantee. It should narrow the list, not override your judgement about a name that will follow your child through school, forms, and a passport queue.
- If the only names for your syllable feel wrong, choose a nearby syllable — many families do.
- Spelling matters more than syllable purity when the child grows up with the name.
- Two-syllable names are easier to pronounce across languages.
- Check how the name looks in Devanagari and in Latin script before deciding.
Naming questions
Is the rashi name compulsory?
No. It is a family and regional tradition, followed closely in some communities and loosely in others. The site gives you the options; the decision belongs to the parents.
What if I do not know the birth time?
The nakshatra needs an accurate time. The Moon sign usually does not, because the Moon stays in a sign for about two and a half days. Use the rashi table if the time is uncertain.
Why do different sites give different syllables?
Panchang traditions and transliteration vary between regions. The sets here are the most widely used, with the common alternatives noted where they matter.
Can a name start with a different letter and still be fine?
Yes. Many families treat the syllable as a guide rather than a rule, especially where the traditional list is short or sounds dated.
Start with the syllable.
Twelve rashis, twenty-seven nakshatras, and a short list of names for each — with meanings.
