The 27 nakshatras and their syllables
The nakshatra is more precise than the rashi. It divides the zodiac into 27 parts and gives each a set of starting syllables.
Why nakshatra beats rashi for naming
A rashi spans about 30 degrees and covers several syllables. A nakshatra spans about 13 degrees and narrows it further, which is why families with an accurate birth time usually name by nakshatra.
The four padas
Each nakshatra has four quarters, or padas. Some traditions assign a different syllable to each pada, which narrows the choice again. If your family follows pada-level naming, ask the astrologer who prepared the kundli.
Accuracy of birth time
The Moon moves through a nakshatra in roughly a day. An error of a few hours can move the birth star, so a recorded time from a hospital is worth more than a remembered one.
Questions people ask
How do I find my baby's nakshatra?
From the birth date, time and place, using a panchang or a kundli. The rashi can be found with less precision; the nakshatra needs the time.
What if the nakshatra syllable has no names I like?
Choose from the same nakshatra's other padas, or from the rashi set. Both are common compromises.
